Idea Selection
The idea we chose was a pickup basketball networking app. The app comprises a peer-to-peer network to which users can upload pickup basketball game times and locations. Other potential players can see a timetable of scheduled games with the names of their locations. We first went through our list and eliminated ideas for which the Archos 5 lacked hardware support. We also cut out ideas that had been done with very similar apps. We arrived at this idea through independently selecting our top five ideas and seeing which overlapped. A reason why this app was chosen is because the target group of this app (pickup basketball players) is well-defined and we could conceivably find users in this target group. Another reason is that we could easily think of extensions to this app, for example forming basketball teams, lists of basketball courts, scorekeeping, etc.
Description
Target User Group
The target user group is people who often play pick-up games of basketball. This probably means (but is not limited to) young males between the ages of 15 to 25. This application will service anyone who has ever wanted to play quality games of pick up basketball, but struggled to find a good place to play or people to play with. Also, this app is for basketball players who would rather not have to send out a lot of text messages or call all of their friends in order to put together a good pick-up run. This app does not include a map or GPS locator: the target user group is already familiar with all potential game locations and only needs to know which has a game at a given time.
Problem Description & Context
To play a game of basketball, players must be in the same place at the same time. They are often spread across one or several cities. Normally, coordination is done with traditional phone calls and text messages. This takes time on the part of the caller, and only people whom he specifically invites will know about the game. Also, someone who’s interested in playing quality pick-up basketball might show up to a park that he thinks will have people playing only to find that all his friends are at another park. This application gives users the ability to amass a network of friends or people they’ve met that also play basketball and know where and when they are playing basketball. Users will be able check the application and find out where all the basketball players in their network are playing basketball.
Why Mobile?
A typical mobile device is always carried by the user. Even roaming around a city, anyone carrying a mobile device can be in contact with anyone else. For people who often play basketball in one of several locations, a mobile device is the only way to contact them reliably, or for them to stay in contact with others.
